1. Tower of God Season 2
One of the most successful anime titles based on content similar to Korean comics, Tower of God, is finally getting its second season. It is a webtoon that has been showing its presence globally in recent years as part of the South Korean pop culture wave, and Tower of God is certainly one of its flagship titles. Originally a webtoon serialized by SIU since 2010, it made headlines when it was first animated in 2020 by Telecom Animation Film. The much-anticipated Tower of God Season 2 (神之塔 -Tower of God- 2nd SEASON) is set to arrive in the summer of 2024.
This anime blends genres like fantasy, action, and adventure, where reaching the top of the tower, believed to grant whatever one desires, is the ultimate goal. Rachel enters the Tower, and the protagonist, Twenty-Fifth Bam, who considers her his everything, follows her into the tower. However, he faces numerous challenges there. In the final episode of the first season, Bam is pushed off by Rachel, revealing what she had been thinking all along. The second season promises even more unexpected developments.

2. Alya Sometimes Hides Her Feelings in Russian
Alya Sometimes Hides Her Feelings in Russian (時々ボソッとロシア語でデレる隣のアーリャさん) is currently one of the most popular light novel series. It started its manga adaptation in 2022 and is now set for an anime adaptation this summer. The sweet romantic comedy story by SunSunSun and the cute illustrations by Momoco are already highly acclaimed, so there is much anticipation for how Doga Kobo will adapt it into an anime. Doga Kobo is also simultaneously producing the original anime Jellyfish Can’t Swim in the Night, making it a hot studio at the moment.
The charm of this anime lies in its main character, Alisa Mikhailovna Kujou, a.k.a. Alya, a beautiful half-Russian, half-Japanese high school girl, who is a quintessential tsundere character. Alya often speaks harshly to the male protagonist, Masachika Kuze, but occasionally whispers sweet words to him in Russian, which she thinks he doesn’t understand. However, the interesting twist is that Masachika fully understands Russian, unbeknownst to Alya. The role of Alya is voiced by the popular voice actress Sumire Uesaka, and there’s also anticipation for how she will perform the Russian language parts.

3. 2.5 Dimensional Seduction
2.5 Dimensional Seduction (2.5次元の誘惑) is one of the most expected newly-started anime series in the summer of 2024. It is an anime adaptation of a popular slice-of-life comedy manga by Yu Hashimoto. Serialized in Shonen Jump+ since 2019, the series focuses on the theme of cosplay, where characters take on the personas of their favorite manga or anime characters. The title of “2.5 Dimension” symbolizes a space “in between,” where 3D represents “reality” and 2D represents “fiction,” creating an intriguing blend of both worlds. A famous anime studio J.C.Staff is in charge of the production of this anime series.
2.5 Dimensional Seduction is a cosplay comedy that follows an Otaku high school boy Masamune Okumura, who has no interest in real-life women and directs his affection toward a 2D character named Lilier, and high school girl Lilysa Amano, who enjoys cosplaying as Liliel. Both share a love for the fictional character Liliel, and after hitting it off, they begin engaging in Lilysa’s hobby of cosplay photography.

4. Shoshimin Series: How to Become Ordinary
Fans of the popular slice-of-life mystery series Hyouka should not miss the start of a new anime adaptation. The anime adaptation of the novel series Shoshimin Series: How to Become Ordinary (〈小市民〉シリーズ) written by the same author, Honobu Yonezawa, has been realized. The original novels began publication in 2004, and four volumes have been published by the time of the anime adaptation. Unlike Hyouka, which was produced by Kyoto Animation, this time Shoshimin Series: How to Become Ordinary is being made by Lapin Track. Established in 2014, Lapin Track is a new studio known for creating high-quality mystery anime such as Undead Girl Murder Farce in 2023.
In this first anime adaptation, the stories of the first and second volumes, The Spring Limited Strawberry Tart Case Arc and The Summer Limited Tropical Parfait Case Arc, are covered. The protagonist, a male high school student named Jogoro Kobato, who had a penchant for solving problems with reasoning during his middle school days and thus had bitter experiences, wishes to lead a peaceful life as an “Ordinary” student in high school. He finds a kindred spirit in a girl named Yuki Osanai, and the two make a pact to become ordinary. However, despite their intentions, they find themselves entangled in a series of inexplicable incidents and misfortunes.

5. Days with My Stepsister
Among the recent romantic comedy light novels, Days with My Stepsister (義妹生活) is one of the most recently popular series, and its anime adaptation is finally set to begin this summer. The original light novel, written by Ghost Mikawa and illustrated by Hiten, has been published since 2021 and was ranked in the 10 Hottest Light Novels for 2022 and 2023 by the Kono Light Novel ga Sugoi! awards hosted by Takarajimasha. The anime adaptation is handled by Studio Deen. A unique aspect of this series is that it originally began as manga-style posts on YouTube, and was also produced in animation form prior to the anime adaptation.
Days with My Stepsister casts a spotlight on a second-grade high school student Yuta Asamura, distanced from women due to his parents’ divorce from his mother’s affair, meets his flamboyant stepsister Saki Ayase after his father’s sudden remarriage. Both wary of relationships from witnessing their parents’ discord, they agree to maintain a proper distance, navigating their new life as family under one roof. Initially strangers, their cautious relationship, born from mutual understanding of familial strife, slowly evolves. This romance anime traces how their connection, tinged with the potential for love, gradually transforms from classmates to siblings, revealing the comfort they find in their shared lives.

6. Koi wa Futago de Warikirenai
Koi wa Futago de Warikirenai (恋は双子で割り切れない) is a new romantic comedy anime set to premiere in the summer of 2024. Based on a light novel written by Shihon Takamura and illustrated by Almic, this series promises to bring the charm and complexity of its original material to the screen. The anime adaptation is produced by ROLL2, marking the studio’s first major project as the primary creator.
Anime centered around twins is not uncommon (there has even been that recent anime focusing on quintuplets), but Koi wa Futago de Warikirenai depicts a love triangle involving twin sisters and a single boy. It’s a romance story about the twins, Rumi and Naori, who have fallen in love with their childhood friend Jun, who lives next door. “My first mistake was falling in love with Jun.” Rumi, the elder twin, has liked Jun since they were young. Similarly, her sister Naori also had feelings for him, but she couldn’t express her true feelings to Jun because she knew about her sister’s feelings. She was afraid of ruining their current relationship…

7. Mayonaka Punch
It’s understandable to have high expectations for original anime that are created from scratch, without any existing source material like manga or light novels as a basis. One of the most anticipated new original anime this season is Mayonaka Punch (真夜中ぱんチ) produced by P.A. Works. Directed by Shu Honma, it features staff members who were part of the 2022 hit comedy anime Ya Boy Kongming! as well as creators who have worked on the Gundam series and The Quintessential Quintuplets series. Ahead of the anime broadcast, a manga adaptation has been unfolding in Young Ace since March.
Mayonaka Punch is a modern anime that focuses on content creators on video-sharing websites, which has become a common phenomenon today. It is a comedy that portrays female NewTubers active on NewTube, the world’s largest video-sharing site. The series is notable for its portrayal of unique NewTuber characters and the viewers’ reactions in a vivid yet humorous manner, making it a cutting-edge series to watch out for.

8. The Café Terrace and Its Goddesses Season 2
The romantic comedy series that started in April 2023, The Café Terrace and Its Goddesses (女神のカフェテラス), is making a swift return just over a year later with its second season. Originally serialized in Weekly Shonen Magazine from 2021, the manga by Koji Seo was first adapted into an anime by Tezuka Productions. The same studio is set to continue producing the series for this upcoming season.
This anime blends the management of a seaside café with a harem rom-com, surrounded by five beautiful maid staff members referred to as goddesses. The story follows a young man named Hayato Kasukabe, who inherits his estranged grandmother’s café, Familia, only to find upon his return that five women have made it their home. He ends up living with them and managing the café together. However, in the second season, a surprising rival shop appears next to Familia, introducing five new cute girls into the mix. How Hayato and the “goddesses” will navigate this bizarre fate left by his grandmother remains to be seen.

9. Quality Assurance in Another World
Quality Assurance in Another World (この世界は不完全すぎる) is the latest isekai fantasy anime. Originally, it is a manga by Masamichi Sato that has been serialized on the manga distribution site Comic Days since 2020, and it is set to be adapted into an anime starting in July. The anime is being produced by two studios, 100Studio and Studio Palette.
In a peaceful world, a monster known as a dragon appears and attacks the village where a 14-year-old girl named Nikola lives. At that time, a member of a secretly organized investigation team called King’s Seeker, named Haga, who is traveling to investigate the cause of the world’s disturbances, appears before her. The story also features unique characters like Amano, a beast shaman, and Akira, an elf swordsman, in this isekai fantasy full of mysteries.

10. Red Cat Ramen
The most eccentric anime of the summer 2024 anime season would have to be Red Cat Ramen (ラーメン赤猫). Red Cat Ramen combines these two elements as its theme, based on a manga serialized on the online manga platform Shonen Jump+ since 2022, which has produced numerous hit series. This slice-of-life comedy manga by Angyaman is adapted into anime by E&H Production.
Tired of working in a harsh environment at an exploitative company, a woman named Tamako Yashiro visits a ramen shop for a job interview. There, she is greeted by the employee cats. The cats skillfully make ramen and serve customers. Tamako takes on tasks such as brushing the cats and other duties only humans can do. It’s a world where the warmth and laughter of everyday life fit seamlessly. It’s also an anime that foodies must watch, with mouthwatering depictions of delicious ramen.
