Isekai anime, in which a protagonist is suddenly transported to a different world in another dimension, have been much more popular among international fans of anime, manga and light novels lately. Overlord is one of the most notable isekai anime featuring the strongest skeletal protagonist Ainz Ooal Gown. It focuses on how Ainz rules the world and establishes absolute trust from his subordinates including the succubus Albedo, the female vampire Shalltear and the dark elf twin siblings Aura and Mare.
The first season of the Overlord anime series was broadcast with 13 episodes in 2015, which was made by a Japanese anime studio Madhouse as well as the following seasons. The isekai and dark-fantasy anime series is one of hot topics now because the fourth and latest season was just released in July 2022.

How many volumes does Overlord have?
Overlord originally began as a web light novel on an online publishing platform Arcadia in 2010, later serialized on another famous user generated novel website Shosetsuka ni Naro from 2012. Its light novel has been published since 2012, written by Kugane Maruyama and illustrated by so-bin.
There are 16 volumes in the light novel series of Overlord published so far (the latest 16th volume was published in July, 2022).
It has been adapted into the successful manga series by Hugin Miyama since 2015, which is composed of 17 volumes so far (the latest 17th volume was released in June, 2022).
Which should you choose, light novels or manga?
To know what will happen in the next episode after the Overlord anime series ends, you should choose the light novel series. There are several volumes that haven’t been adapted into the anime series yet in the light novel series, which you can fully enjoy as its sequel. On the other hand, the anime series progresses further than the manga adaptation while a new volume of the manga series is released constantly.
After you watch the anime series, the rest of Overlord is accessible only by reading the light novel series. That’s why you should know which volume to re-start reading the Overlord light novel from.
Light Novel: Which volume of Overlord to read after the anime?
The forth season of the Overlord anime series ended with the 13th and final episode “The Witch of the Falling Kingdom” in September, 2022, which corresponds to the end of Volume 14 of the light novel. The latest season covers Volume 10, 11 and 14 of the light novel series, and the upcoming anime movie will be based on Volume 12 and 13.
Season 1: From Volume 1 to Volume 3
Season 2: From Volume 4 to Volume 6
Season 3: From Volume 7 to Volume 9
Season 4: From Volume 10 to Volume 11 and Volume 14
Movie (Overlord: The Holy Kingdom): From Volume 12 to Volume 13
So that means you can enjoy the following story after the anime series finishes from Volume 15 “The Half Elf God-kin Part 1” in the light novel. Plus, for the story the fourth season skips, you can read Volume 12 and 13.
If you can’t wait until the next anime movie Overlord: The Holy Kingdom’s coming, it’s also recommended to read Volume 12 and 13 in advance!
The expected next season Overlord V would re-start based on Volume 15 and the following volumes.
Manga: Which volume of Overlord to read after the anime?
The manga series of Overlord has been constantly published since 2015, however, the anime series outpaces it. If you like manga and the Overlord series so much, the manga adaptation may be worth checking as well as the anime and original light novel. You can’t also deny the possibility that the manga series will overtake the anime series in the future.
For now, it’s highly recommended to watch Overlord in the high-quality anime and re-start it in the light novel series.
When will Overlord Season 5 air?
It has not been announced that the following season Overlord V is produced yet. Many fans are looking forward to the upcoming anime movie Overlord: The Holy Kingdom released in the near future at the moment!
