How many volumes does Sword Art Online have?
Sword Art Online is mainly divided into two part: Sword Art Online (SAO) and Sword Art Online Progressive (SAOP). There are 27 volumes in Sword Art Online (the latest 27th volume released in October 2022) and 8 volumes in Sword Art Online Progressive (the latest 8th volume released in June 2021) published so far.
The spin-off anime series Sword Art Online Alternative Gun Gale Online is based on the same-titled novel written by Keiichi Sigsawa, which is composed of 13 volumes (the latest 13th volume released in March 2023).
Where does the Sword Art Online anime end in light novel?
The third season of the Sword Art Online anime series, divided into the two parts (Sword Art Online: Alicization and Sword Art Online: Alicization – War of Underworld), ends with Episode 47 “New World.” Which corresponds to the end of Volume 18 in the light novel series.
If you want to enjoy the following story of the anime series, it’s recommended to read the light novel from Volume 19 “Sword Art Online 19: Moon Cradle.” The volumes 19 and 20 present the side story of Alicization Arc, the third season of the anime series.

Where does the Sword Art Online Progressive movie end in light novel?
Let’s see the newly-started movie series Sword Art Online Progressive, which is becoming another mainstream of the SAO franchise.
The first part Sword Art Online Progressive: Aria of a Starless Night was released in October, 2021. It covers just the one-third of the Sword Art Online Progressive light novel volume 1. And, the next film Sword Art Online Progressive: Scherzo of Deep Night is also adapted from only a part of the light novel series.
That’s why I recommend you to start from the first volume of the light novel even if you have watched the movies.

In terms of new releases, the anime movies of Sword Art Online Progressive have been released, and the second season of Sword Art Online Alternative Gun Gale Online has been announced. On the other hand, there has been no announcement yet for the fourth season of the main Sword Art Online series. However, an anime adaptation of the Unital Ring Arc is likely in the future.
