2022 is the good year for all anime fans around the globe when there are dozens of promising anime movies scheduled to be released at the theater in addition to lots of television anime series. The 2020’s record-breaking anime film Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Mugen Train changed the history of Japanese cinema, and it’s also expected more attractive anime movies are coming out in the near future.
For every global fan of Japanese anime, I’d like to introduce the list of best anime movies 2022 including the successful anime series’s sequels and the brand new one-shot films directed by famous directors. Just after they are released in Japan, they will be come to the big screen in foreign countries or distributed on online video streaming platforms with subtitles and dubs.

Jujutsu Kaisen 0: The Movie (劇場版 呪術廻戦 0), which premiered on the Christmas Eve of 2021, is still one of the hottest anime movies to watch in 2022. It earned over 10 billion yen within a couple of months of the release. As the prequel of the anime series airing between 2020 and 2021, Jujutsu Kaisen 0: The Movie is adapted from the manga series volume 0. Instead of the main characters in the television series including Yuji Itadori and Megumi Fushiguro, it focuses on a past of Yuta Okkotsu and his teacher Satoru Gojo. 2. The Orbital Children
For fans of science fiction, The Orbital Children (地球外少年少女) is a highest-priority anime movies released in 2022, directed by Mitsuo Iso. There are two parts in The Orbital Children, and all chapters were distributed worldwide exclusively on Netflix at the same time as the part 1 came to the theater in January, 2022. It is set in the futuristic world in 2045, where people easily travel to the space with highly developed technology. How will children survive if they are stranded in the space station?

3. Goodbye, Don Glees!
A fine Japanese anime studio Madhouse completed a coming-of-age film Goodbye, Don Glees! (グッバイ、ドン・グリーズ!) in 2022 with the director Atsuko Ishizuka, who is also famous for No Game No Life (2014) and A Place Further than the Universe (2018). Set in a small rural town near Tokyo and Iceland, this anime movie tells the story of Don Glees, the small brigade formed by three adolescents: a loner Roma, his only friend Toto and an optimistic newcomer Drop. See a miraculous adventure of the three boys!

4. Odd Taxi: In the Woods
Many anime fans highly valued the 2021 anime series Odd Taxi (オッドタクシー), categorized as mystery. The 13 episodes of the television anime series are reconstructed and will hit the screen as Odd Taxi: In the Woods (映画 オッドタクシー イン・ザ・ウッズ) with its sequel in April, 2022. It follows anthropomorphized animal characters including a 41-year old walrus Odokawa and his few friend and white gibbon Kakihana, who are unknowingly involved in a suspenseful incident. 5. Detective Conan: The Bride of Halloween
As a new anime movie of the famous anime series is released every year, Detective Conan: The Bride of Halloween (名探偵コナン ハロウィンの花嫁) awaits the fans in the spring of 2022. The 25th Detective Conan anime film is a spin-off but related to the main story of the manga and anime series as well as the other titles in the past. The latest film of the live legend mystery casts a spotlight on a police officer Toru Amuro and the just married couple Wataru Takagi and Miwako Sato.

6. Bubble
Bubble (バブル) is one of the most anticipated new anime movies of 2022. It will be distributed only on Netflix from April 28, which will be followed by its movie premiere on May 13. Produced by the growing anime studio Wit Studio, Bubble is directed by Tetsuro Araki, who is known for the Attack on Titan series. And, other renowned creators join the production: a screenwriter Gen Urobuchi (Puella Magi Madoka Magica), a character designer Takeshi Obata (Death Note) and a music composer Hiroyuki Sawano (Promare). The sci-fi film revolves around youngsters living in an alternative Tokyo under the catchphrase “Gravity Is Broken – Leap As You Like”.

The popular romantic-comedy series will be finally concluded with the first and last movie The Quintessential Quintuplets the Movie (映画 五等分の花嫁) in May, 2022. The two seasons of the television anime series aired in 2019 and 2021, adapted from the Negi Haruba’s manga series serialized between 2017 and 2020. The Quintessential Quintuplets the Movie covers the rest of the story that had not been adapted yet. What will happen to the protagonist Futaro and the Quintuplet heroines? 8. Inu-Oh
Inu-Oh (犬王) is a musical animated movie which premiered at the 78th Venice International Film Festival in 2021 ahead of a theatrical release in May, 2022. It is produced by the modern anime studio Science Saru based on the original novel Tales of the Heike: INU-OH written by Hidemo Furukawa as the 2022’s anime series The Heike Story is adapted from his novel by the same studio. Inu-Oh has the theme of Nogaku, which is known as the oldest theater art in existence all over the world, featuring a Nogaku performer Inu-Oh from the Muromachi period.

9. Teasing Master Takagi-san the Movie

A hot young Japanese animation studio Studio Colorido will release Drifting Home (雨を告げる漂流団地) as its third full-length animated film in September, 2022, following the previous exciting and heartwarming works Penguin Highway in 2018 and A Whisker Away in 2020. 19. The First Slam Dunk
The classic basketball-themed manga and anime series will come back to the theater after an interval of over two decades, titled The First Slam Dunk. The legendary Takehiko Inoue’s manga was serialized as a front manga of Weekly Shonen Jump between 1990 and 1996, which was made into the 101-episode anime adaptation in 1993-1996. The fans are looking forward to the passionate story of the members of the Shohoku basketball team including Hanamichi Sakuragi and Kaede Rukawa.

20. Kaguya-sama: Love is War: The First Kiss Never Ends
Here is good news for fans of the popular recent rom-com series Kaguya-sama: Love is War: A sequel to the third season of the anime series has been decided as a new anime movie titled Kaguya-sama: Love is War: The First Kiss Never Ends (かぐや様は告らせたい-ファーストキッスは終わらない-). Following the current 37 episodes in the three seasons, the next episode is coming to the theater in the winter of 2022, which will air on TV later.
Finally, Kaguya kissed the president of the school council Miyuki in the third season after lots of mind games. However, the relationship between them still seems ambivalent. The new movie presents the story of Kaguya and Miyuki set in the Christmas season.
