2. Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End

Are you tired of watching fantasy adventure already? It is true that fantasy adventure may be a genre that has run out of all the elements and cannot envision much of a new future. However, contrary to such thoughts, Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End (葬送のフリーレン) has stirred up the emotions of many people as soon as it started airing. Based on a manga by Kanehito Yamada and Tsukasa Abe, which has been serialized since 2020, it was well received by the public. Despite the manga’s already high level of perfection, Madhouse’s anime adaptation takes Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End to another level. The first episode was an unprecedented four-episode broadcast on the Friday Road Show program, which attracted a lot of attention.

The main character is Frieren, a female elf of a long-lived species who lives for more than 1,000 years. The story is set in a world after the hero Himmel and his party member Frieren have already accomplished the great feat of defeating the Demon King. The themes of the anime include the dissimilarity in the passage of time between the long-lived Frieren and ordinary people, and the recollection of her journey with the brave Himmel, who had a great influence on Frieren despite being human. Frieren sets out on a journey with his new friends, but the past and present are intermingled in this anime, which is filled with emotional devices throughout.
