More and more successful light novel series have been made into manga and anime adaptations recently, which is one of the key sources of the latest Japanese pop culture. Bofuri: I Don’t Want to Get Hurt, so I’ll Max Out My Defense, which is also known as just Bofuri, is a popular anime series adapted from the same titled light novel.
The comedy and fantasy anime casts a spotlight on a young girl protagonist Maple, who has very little tolerance for pain and chooses a large shield as her primary weapon. She concentrates on only increasing her defense ability in the virtual world of the MMORPG named NewWorld Online.
Based on the original light novel of Bofuri: I Don’t Want to Get Hurt, so I’ll Max Out My Defense, its anime adaptation was released with 12 episodes by a Japanese anime studio Silver Link in 2020. It has been also adapted into a manga series since 2018. Fortunately, it has been officially announced that Bofuri Season 2 is scheduled to air in 2023.

How many volumes does Bofuri: I Don’t Want to Get Hurt, so I’ll Max Out My Defense have?
Bofuri: I Don’t Want to Get Hurt, so I’ll Max Out My Defense was started on a Japanese online novel publishing platform Shosetsuka ni Naro by the author Yuumikan from 2016. It has been published with the illustrator Koin since 2017. There are 17 volumes of the Bufuri light novel so far (the latest 14th volume released in August, 2022).
It has been also made in the manga series by the manga artist Jiro Oimoto since 2018. The Bofuri manga adaptation has 5 volumes (the latest 5th volume released in October, 2021).
Which should you choose, light novels or manga?
There are two options to enjoy Bofuri apart from the anime series: light novels and manga. However, it’s actually only the light novel series to enjoy a sequel to the anime since the anime moves ahead of the manga series. Even though it overtakes the anime series in the near future, the upcoming second season of the anime series will make great progress. Let’s choose the light novel to continue the story of Bofuri!

The first season of Bofuri finishes with Episode 12 “Defense and Link”, which matches the end of Volume 4 of the light novel series. It covers the story based on from Volume 1 to 4.
