Where Does Haruhi Suzumiya Anime End in Light Novel and Manga?

Haruhi Suzumiya Series is well known in various respects: As a representative Sekai-kei (a kind of genre in anime and light novel), one of the most successful anime adapted from light novels, a great work by Kyoto Animation, and so on. The sci-fi comedy is mixed with slice of life and paranormal phenomena, following an alien high school girl Haruhi Suzumiya and her unique friends.

The first anime series of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya aired with 14 episodes out of sequence in 2006. In 2009, the second anime series was broadcast with 28 episodes including the past 14 episodes in chronological order. They were adapted from Nagaru Tanigawa’s popular light novel series by Kyoto Animation. The following anime movie The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya was released in 2010.

As a matter of fact, the anime series and movie are only a small part of Haruhi Suzumiya Series. How many volumes does Haruhi Suzumiya have?

The light novel of Haruhi Suzumiya Series has been written by Nagaru Tanigawa and illustrated by Noizi Ito since 2003, which is composed of 12 volumes so far. Lots of Haruhi Suzumiya fans were delighted at the release of the 12th volume in 2020 since there had been no news since the previous volumes (Volume 10 and 11) were published in June 2011. They have realized that Haruhi Suzumiya Series hasn’t been over yet.

On the other hand, the light novel of Haruhi Suzumiya Series was adapted into the manga series by Gaku Tsugano from 2005 to 2013, which consists of 20 volumes that are based on the light novel Volume 1 to 11.

Which should you read after the anime series, light novels or manga?

There are two ways to enjoy the following story of Haruhi Suzumiya Series after the anime series and movie end: the original light novel series and the manga adaptation. It’s strongly recommended to re-start with the light novel series after the anime.

The manga series are easy for some people to read than the novels, however, they have to understand the manga adaptation is a different thing from the anime series and the light novel series. The illustrations in the manga series are drawn in a different way and its story are not completely based on the original story of the novel.

That’s why I recommend you to read the light novel series after completing the anime series.

Light Novel: Which volume to read after the The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya anime?

The anime series of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya finished with Episode 28 “Someday in the Rain”. Then, which volume should you re-start reading the light novel after that?

Anime Series (The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya): From Volume 1 to Volume 3 (a part of Volume 5 and 6)
Anime Movie (The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya): Volume 4

To go straightforward to the point, you can enjoy the sequel to the anime series in the light novel series Volume 5. As the correspondence table above suggests, the television anime series covers Volume 1 to 3 and a part of Volume 5 and 6. The anime film The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya is based on Volume 4.

You can complete Endless Eight and The Day of Sagittarius from Volume 5 and The Adventures of Mikuru Asahina Episode 00 and Live Alive from Volume 6 in the existing anime series.

As I said above, the light novel series should take priority for the following story after the anime series since it cannot be said that the manga series is totally based on the original light novel series. If you want to try Haruhi Suzumiya Series in a different way, it’s not a bad option to choose the manga series.

You can enjoy the following story after the The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya anime from Volume 10 in the manga series. It includes Snow Mountain Syndrome from the light novel Volume 5 and Love at First Sight from the light novel Volume 6.
