Fullmetal Alchemist

Fullmetal Alchemist (鋼の錬金術師), one of the most popular manga in the 2000s, should be picked up on this best adventure manga list. The dark-fantasy adventure manga is known as the best work of Hiromu Arakawa, who is also famous for Silver Spoon (銀の匙 Silver Spoon) and The Heroic Legend of Arslan (アルスラーン戦記). After serializing for about a decade, it completed the story with the 27th volume in 2010. There are two versions of the anime adaptation based on it.

A masterpiece of fantasy adventure with a vast fanbase both domestically and internationally. Fullmetal Alchemist adapts the theme of alchemy for action and also endows enemy characters with the globally shared motif of the seven deadly sins. While the backbone of the story is the Elric brothers confronting immense power, the well-established personalities of other characters such as Roy Mustang and Scar also add color and depth to the manga.

3. JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure

JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure
JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure

For both classic and present manga fans, JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure (ジョジョの奇妙な冒険) should be added to their best recommendations. The fantasy adventure manga started with the first part Phantom Blood in 1987 and the latest ninth part The JoJoLands started in 2023. It has been made into the high-quality anime adaptation by a Japanese anime studio David Production since 2012.

The part one titled Phantom Blood is set in England in 1988 centering on a wealthy noble named Jonathan Joestar and his adopted brother Dio Brando. The following parts of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure also concentrate on the stories of the Joestar Family and their battles with supernatural power called Stand.

Writer’s Note
A long-running manga that can now be called a classic series, switching through different parts. Its distinctive character designs and unconventional dialogues make it a truly unique work not found in other manga. While there’s some connectivity between parts, you can enjoy the story starting from any part. For those who haven’t read JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure yet, I personally recommend starting from Part 3: Stardust Crusaders, where the concept of Stands is introduced, or Part 5: Golden Wind.
