19. The Boy and the Heron (2023)
The Boy and the Heron (君たちはどう生きるか) is a particularly talked-about work among Hayao Miyazaki’s later creations. Released 10 years after Miyazaki’s The Wind Rises (2013), and 9 years after Studio Ghibli’s last fully in-house produced full-length 2D animation, When Marnie Was There (2014), the film drew inspiration from Genzaburo Yoshino’s novel How Do You Live? (1937) with the different English title (while it is titled as the same as the novel in Japanese). Uniquely, the film was released with virtually no promotion, leaving the storyline a mystery until viewers watched it, creating an exciting and rare experience. Some found the plot complex, while others praised it as a multifaceted literary work, especially for fans familiar with the backgroud of Studio Ghibli or Hayao Miyazaki.
The Boy and the Heron begins in Japan during World War II, focusing on a young boy named Mahito Maki, who has lost his mother, Hisako, in a fire. His father, Shoichi, a military factory manager, remarries Hisako’s younger sister, Natsuko, and Mahito is evacuated to Natsuko’s family home (which is also Hisako’s family home). In the mansion where he’s relocated, Mahito encounters a strange blue heron. Led by the heron, he heads to an old tower next to the mansion, and the story shifts to a different world where Mahito’s fantasy adventure begins. The narrative explores Mahito’s sorrow over losing his beloved mother and his confusion about how to relate to his new mother.
