Following Off Season, the new series Monster Season of Monogatari Series started with Shinobumonogatari (忍物語). Shinobumonogatari was released on July 20, 2017 as the first part of Monster Season focusing on the protagonist Koyomi Araragi after his entering the university.
Shinobumonogatari is the 23rd volume of the entire Monogatari Series, positioned after the previous book titled Musubimonogatari (the fourth and final part of Off Season). It’s composed of a single episode Shinobu Mustard.
On the cover illustration by Vofan, you can see Shinobu Oshino wearing a bloodstained white dress, putting a mask of a demon and holding a sword that looks like the legendary demon sword called Youtou Kokorowatari in her left hand.

Shinobu Mustard (Monster Season: Episode 1)
Shinobu Mustard (しのぶマスタード) is the only story contained in Shinobumonogatari, the beginning part of Monster Season. The Episode One focuses on the protagonist Koyomi Araragi, who has been recently enrolled at the university.
Plot: Shinobu Mustard
Shinobu Mustard is set in the spring when Koyomi Araragi just enters Manase National University. He is called to the hospital by Izuko Gaen, the leader of apparition specialists, and is shown a mummified high school girl who fails in vampirization. She is identified as Kie Harimaze, a first-grade high schooler and a member of the girls basketball team in Naoetsu Private High School.
In addition to the second mummy, the third mummified high schooler is found with a cryptic note like a dying message. Koyomi shows up for a cryptography class in the university to ask his new friend Meniko Hamukai to decode the coded message.
It turns out to mean the letters “D/S/V”, which inspires Izuko to gather that the serial mummy incidents may be involved by Deathtopia Virtuoso Suicide-Master, the legendary vampire that transformed Princess Acerola into a vampire named Kiss-Shot Acerola-Orion Heart-Under-Blade about 600 years ago.

- Koyomi is told that five girls’ basketball club members are missing by Suruga Kanbaru and her former teammate Hoshiame Higasa.
With his partner vampire Shinobu Oshino, he goes to North Shirahebi Shrine, and the new goddess Mayoi Hachikuji introduces a mummified little girl to them there, who turns out to be Deathtopia Virtuoso Suicide-Master. Mayoi discovered the infantilized vampire that was buried in the mountain at that day.
To save the weakened and mummified vampire, Mayoi requests Koyomi to go to hell to obtain special blood. After being cut with the Shinobu’s demon sword called Kokorowatari, Koyomi finds out he is sent to heaven instead of hell.
In front of Koyomi, a beautiful naked woman Princess Acerola shows up, who is what Shinobu was before her being transformed into Kiss-Shot Acerola-Orion Heart-Under-Blade. She has him accept her saliva from her mouth to his mouth.
Izuko revives Koyomi from heaven with Shinobu’s another legendary demon sword Yumewatari. Suicide-Master is restored to its former state physically owing to the saliva of Princess Acerola given from Koyomi’s mouth.
And then, the fourth mummified high schooler is found, and it is recognized that the only missing girl is Souwa Kiseki.
Koyomi transports Suicide-Master to the house of Suruga, and the unconscious vampire awakens after Izuko chants s spell. She confesses that she got food poisoning by sucking the blood of the only high school girl.
They see a possibility that the fifth missing girl who has not yet found is successfully transformed into a vampire and attack other teammates of the girls’ basketball club. While Koyomi gets concerned for safety of Suruga and her friends and goes to see them, beyond the mark, the vampirized girl with blond hair and golden eyes sneaks into the house of Suruga and gets to see her “master”.
Koyomi hurries back to the house of Suruga and the culprit is revealed as Kie Harimaze, who was believed to be the initially discovered mummy. She encountered Suicide-Master on the way home from school since she suffers from various problems related to the basketball club such as the intense training and negative relationships between teammates and wished so.
Just when Kie is about to launch into an attack on Koyomi, she is fiercely attacked by Yozuru Kagenui, a specialist and a violent Onmyoji. Yozuru just arrives there on the request of her supervisor Izuko.
In the end, Kie is transformed back into a human, and Suicide-Master is kicked out of the nation alive.

Can you enjoy the anime adaptation of Shinobumonogatari?
Monogatari Series, the popular light novel series written by Nisio Isin, has been adapted into the anime series by Shaft since the first part Bakemonogatari aired in 2009. And then, Final Season was competed with Zoku Owarimonogatari in 2018-2019.
Many fans of Monogatari Series are wondering if the rest of the light novel parts are made into anime adaptations such as Off Season and Monster Season. The director Akiyuki Shinbo said it would depend on the anime production company Aniplex, however, we can believe they will create the finest-quality anime adaptation of Shinobumonogatari with high quality in the future since the studio Shaft has created that Monogatari Series, which had been looked on impossible to be adapted into anime.
