Monogatari Series, a great mystery and comedy masterpiece these days, is an anime series whose following seasons have been much-expected since the latest title Zoku Owari Monogatari was released in 2018.
There are five major seasons in the original light novel series written by Nisio Isin: First, Second, Final, Off and Monster Season. The first three seasons were adapted into the anime series between 2009 and 2018. The main story centering on the protagonist Koyomi Araragi has been concluded in the anime series. Monogatari Series has been also adapted into the successful manga series by the famous manga artist Oh! great titled Bakemonogatari since 2018.

How many volumes does Monogatari Series have?
Monogatari Series is the general term for Nisio Isin’s light novel series starting with its first title Bakemonogatari, which has been published by a large Japanese publishing company Kodansha since 2006. It comprises five parts: First Season, Second Season, Final Season, Off Season and Monster Season. Including a spin-off book titled Mazemonogatari, there are 29 volumes in the Monogatari Series light novel so far (the latest 30th volume titled Ikusamonogatari released in May, 2023).
The light novel series was adapted into the manga series titled Bakemonogatari by Oh! great starting from 2018, who is also known for the Air Gear series published between 2002 and 2012. The manga adaptation was completed with 22 volumes in 2023.

Which should you choose, light novels or manga?
There appears to be two ways to explore Monogatari Series apart from the anime series, and both are worth reading with their advantages. However, it’s only the light novel series to enjoy the following story after the Monogatari Series anime ends. There are many volumes that haven’t been adapted into the anime yet in the light novel series while the manga series hasn’t caught up with even the anime series.
Please be also noted that the manga adaptation by Oh! great is very high in quality, who creates his own interpretation of the original novels. For those who want to understand the Monogatari world from a different angle, it’s recommended to read the manga series as well!
Light Novel: Which volume of Monogatari Series to read after the anime?
The anime series of Monogatari Series finished with Zoku Owarimonogatari in 2019, which had been released as an anime movie in 2018. It corresponds to the end of Final Season in both the anime and light novel series. The next title to Zoku Owarimonogatari is Orokamonogatari, the first part of Off Season. You can read the sequels to Final Season from standpoints of various characters in Off Season.

Orokamonogatari includes these chapters: Sodachi Fiasco, Suruga Bonehead and Tsukihi Undo. Musubimonogatari, the final and fourth volume of Off Season, tells the story after Koyomi Araragi graduates from the university. On the other hand, the fifth part Monster Season presents the story of Koyomi Araragi as a university student.
Many new volumes of Monogatari Series are published after the anime series ended, but they haven’t been published as the English edition overseas yet. In the English edition, 20 volumes covering from First Season to Final Season have been already released like the anime series. However, it hasn’t been announced that the following volumes like Orokamonogatari onwards will be published in English in the near future.

Manga: Which volume of Monogatari Series to read after the anime?
The manga series of Monogatari Series has covered only a part of the whole series yet. It’s not like you can go ahead of the anime series in the manga adaptation. Nevertheless, you can enjoy the world of Monogatari Series much deeper, which is rebuilt by the skilled manga artist Oh! great. There will be many points you didn’t notice in the anime series.
It’s highly recommended to see the thrilling drawings of Koyomi and the apparitions and the cutest heroines including Tsubasa Hanekawa and Hitagi Senjogahara. As far as I’m concerned, it’s interesting and attractive that Suruga Kanbaru and Nadeko Sengoku are represented in a little different manner from the anime series.
When will Off Season and Monster Season air?
I never thought it would be announced so soon, but it has been decided to produce an anime adaptation of the sequel to Monogatari series, Off Season and Monster Season (it’s still undecided whether these will be Season 4, or Season 4 and 5). This announcement was made on January 18, 2024, right after the release of the remake of the Kizumonogatari trilogy movie, Kizumonogatari: Koyomi Vamp. In terms of light novels, the two seasons are about the volume of 10 books, so it’s a bit less than the combined volume of the anime First and Second Seasons, meaning it might be composed of about 40-50 episodes in the anime. Anyway, let’s look forward to it and wait for further updates.
